M1A1 "History" Netpack Vol. 2
30 August 2010

Part of The M1 Map Conversion Project (2010).

For details on The M1 Map Conversion Project and its pieces/parts, please see the accompanying M1 Map Conversion Project Read Me (links to all the files required to run this netpack are also contained in the read me).

Note that the project is slated to continue indefinitely.

M1A1 "HISTORY" NETPACK VOL. 2

ATTENTION: In this download you will find a file called "13.dds". Please place this inside your M1A1 folder, because there is an embedded MML file in the map "Pfhor a Few Dollars More" which points to the DDS. "Pfhor a Few Dollars More" will function without it, of course, but you will see only a black stripe instead of the hi-res texture. This DDS/MML was created because there is no support for the M1-specific texture in M1A1 (for whatever reason).

ALSO: Since there is no real map-by-map description being provided aside the posted screenshots and the READ ME excerpts which follow, in this Vol. 2 netpack the following maps are truly the stand-outs which deserve your special attentions: Home Pfhor the Holidays, Milestones, Pfhor a Few Dollars More, and The Woolen Mill. While the rest are absolutely fun and great in their own rights (or they'd not be here), these mentioned four are the cream of the pack (in the opinion of the converter...your mileage may vary, of course).

The Vol. 2 maps are:

01. Evilution by Biks
02. Festung by ProleByte
03. Gilligan's Island by Chris Ashton
04. Home Pfhor the Holidays by Nick Roemer
05. Milestones by Randall Shaw
06. Pfhor a Few Dollars More by Sriranga Veeraraghavan
07. Pillars Unto You by Bruce Hartzler
08. The Green Hills of Death by Chris Johnson
09. The Woolen Mill by Phil Harvey
10. Two Small Flames We Saw by Sriranga Veeraraghavan

All maps converted to M1A1 by M1 Map Dude <M1MapDude@yahoo.com>

Feel free to e-mail with requests, info, or corrections.

And remember: Many of these maps have never been seen or played by the modern Marathon community, due to their having been released exclusively on the Macintosh platform, some as long as 15 years ago (as of this writing).

All original M1 map files are included here in a separate archive, for the curious and for "completeness".

Included below are the modified texts of the original "Read Me" files that came with each map.

Enjoy.

THE WALLS ARE ALIVE!! Constantly changing configuration, where the walls appear and disappear at random intervals. Think you're safe? Not for long...don't stand in one place too long. Contains a bunker and higher ground to look down at what's happening.

From a series of network Marathon maps geared towards two-to-four players.

They were created with Phorte and MIA (each program has its strengths.) All of them took some planning on my part and a couple of days of programming. But enough of the hype! Hope you like.

If you have any comments, please give me a shout!

Hello, it's me again: the creator of CrashCity. The idea for this came from a playground fortress, hence the name "Festung," complete with dungeon and satellite areas.

This little creation I developed due to my love of arenas. If you like arenas, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

There's a pretty good selection of weapons and wide variety of combat venues to enjoy.

There are a total of 6 secret areas, containing some of the more devastating weapons and items.

Be forwarned, the map can be disorienting due to its symmentrical nature.

This map is designed for up to five players (add more if you want to). You start off in a small room with two teleports that take you to opposite sides of the main arena. Don't kill each other here, the real killing begins once you enter the teleports. The teleports are here so that you can choose which side to go to. You will also have to fight-off some aliens at first! This means everyone has to fight for a common cause and then go kill each other afterward!

The switches control the bridges. Use them as a defense. Drop the other team's bridge, while you run to get the goodies. There are four teleporters on the bottom level to get you out of the lava. Know where they are and use them quickly.

It's that time of year again...

Cheese me!

Here's my second net map, "Home Pfhor The Holidays". Play it by yourself or with friends, enemies, aquaintances, milk men, coroners, primates, small red insects, protozoa, anthropomorphic shoehorns, The All Mighty God™, or that big burly guy with the knife who is looming up behind you. If for some wild and wacky reason you want to play this as a net map, you'll probably need 2-8 players to make it interesting. (never coulda guessed, eh?) As for the map itself, it has a little of everything, from the main arena, to the windy little mess of pasageways in the basement. I'd also have to say its quite dark. but dark is good. There arent many hiding places, so you have little choice but to keep moving, and watch your back. Ive play tested it on a wide range of computers, including one Centris 610, and also the same Centris 610.

Of course, its also playable as a solo map, and can get quite tough if your not careful. Yes, there are lots of aliens, so you may want to turn them off when net playing... I have no way to test this with other people over a network, but i'm just guessing theres enough ammo/critters, So Puhleeez send me feedback! Oh, and the S'pht are on your side, so refrain from wasting them in cold blood, they help alot when playing solo.

<BEG MODE ON>
In return for this map I ask only one thing... if you play a net game on it, send me the film! This one thing I desire more than anything else in the world (except Kathy Ireland)... If you dont play any net games, drop me a quick email, c'mon, it only takes a few seconds!
<BEG MODE OFF>

This map was made entirely with Pfhorte 1.0d25, The numero uno bestest map editor out there, over a course of three days. On to the manditory "thank you" list...

Thanks to Bungie (To you I give my favorite goat, snowflake.), Steve Iraelson (When are you going to stop making Pfhorte cooler?), The makers of Jolly Ranchers (now *that's* food.), They Might Be Giants (for their truly inspirational music, which the neighbors are starting to get sick of), and last but not least- all the denizens of #marathon on IRC.

Woo woo, I have a web page! For a good time, point NetScape at: http://www.wolfenet.com/~stompbox/ Try it, you'll like it. Get info and screenshots of all of my maps, visit the Pfhor Anatomy page, or just peruse my [gargantuan] list of links.

And dont forget to download my other map, "The Land Of Dairy Queen" from my home page or the Marathon Map Page!

Oh, and before I forget... Bill Gates: BITE ME!

Randall Shaw (aka, FrigidMan) <FrigidMan@asu.edu>

It was created with Phorte1.0d5. Map was finished on April 14th 1995.

A few things to mention about "Milestones"...

It is a true net map, so no net patch is needed.

The level is very hard on solo when playing in total carnage.

Play the map before looking at it with an editor...much more fun finding all the secrets that way.

Other than the obvious ones, that's all I have to say.

"Pfhor a Few Dollars More" is part of the "Unsavory Tidbits (M1)" netmap package, but is being released here as a standalone map. It is one of the M1 net levels I have made and feel is fun enough that other people might enjoy.

This level has been extensively played over Ethernet and LocalTalk (AppleTalk) on a variety of machines. I have personally seen the levels work on a IIcx, IIci, Centris 650, PowerBook 180, PowerBook Duo 230, PowerBook 5300cs, Quadra 650, PPC 6100 and a PPC 7100. I have been told that they work fine on a PPC 8100, but I haven't seen that.

Most of the levels are small and were designed to be played between PowerBooks. Some of the levels were designed on my PowerBook180. Most were designed on either my uncle's PPC 6100 or my Centris 650. All the levels were constructed using Pfhorte1.0d24.

This is a very nice small arena-type level. The simple layout keeps the emphasis on killing each other, rather than taking advantage of secrets.

There are no safe sniper perches. There should be enough weapons to keep at least three players (and maybe more) well-armed.

Actually, it was just a test map for a few ideas. I've never actually played it much. If you want it though, it's yours. Feel free to change anything or everything (you're right, it needs more weapons).

The Green Hills of Death v1.1 M1A1

The Green Read Me of Death!

"Gee, it's pretty dark out here in the countryside, isn't it? What's going on over there? I hear fighting. Maybe we'd better take our picnic somewhere else."

If you wanted to create a 3D fractal landscape in Marathon, what would you do?

I created a fractal heightmap in Photoshop, filled graph paper with the height information of lots of tiny squares, made a map out of it, and crashed like a rock.

Then I cut it down and tried it again, and it still crashed like a rock.

Then I gave up on the fractal heightmap idea and made "The Green Hills of Death".

This is a pretty big map, particularly since it's very dark. We're talking really dark. That means that you might be finding people by watching for muzzle flashes some charming summer evening. The darkness is pretty necessary- without it there wouldn't be the sense of realism in this landscape-attempt.

Most hills you can walk up, but some you'll have to go around. I'm not sure how much more 3D Marathon 1 can get, though it should be interesting to try Son of The Green Hills of Death on Marathon Infinity when I get it.

Those noises you hear when you start the level are a lot of fighters, projectile and normal, ganging up on a group of BoBs. In technical terms this is known as "all hell breaking loose". You might agree when you see a bunch of fighters running out of the darkness at you.

Okay, so it's insanely vicious- the projectile fighters are quite happy to shoot at you even when you can't see them- if it's just too ridiculous then turn off the monsters and use it as a net level. It's a pity I have no chance to test net levels, but I'll do my best to make good ones. There are eight entry points in this one.

Made on a 68K without running Ignore Zero Divides. It should run on anything. Enjoy.

v1.1 Adds items and makes netplay more net-like.
